Why dedicated is better
than a shared access
Shared access
This means that cable subscribers have to compete for bandwidth, and will not consistently enjoy the broadband speed that they have paid for. The problem with this scenario is that the flow of data may be fast when there are few people on the highway. But as more users log on, the speed of transmission slows down.

What do I choose for the best Internet experience? Only dedicated local access ensures:
  • Access speed enjoyed by your home is not affected by the number of users online. You will enjoy your maximum guaranteed download speed all day long.
  • You enjoy consistent bandwidth all the time so you share your access with your family and not everyone else.
  • Login broadband access for better online security.
  • Best value for money. You should enjoy exactly what was promised to you and what you are paying for.
  • Avoid the "Double whammy!" Yes, at the end of the day, all your content can only be delivered as fast as Internet bandwidth will allow. Sharing your bandwidth internationally once is enough, don't let it happen again at the local level.

Obviously, dedicated access is equipped to provide you with consistent download speed. And it is not dependent on the number of users who are accessing the Internet. In fact, the list of reasons why you should choose ADSL is rather long.
  • What is dedicated Internet access?
In Singapore, broadband Internet access can be enjoyed at home through two different technologies, either Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) or cable. They are referred to as dedicated and shared access respectively because of the differences in how they allow Internet access to occur.
What is the difference between dedicated and shared access?
The easiest way to explain the two options is to use an analogy. Assume that the Internet Service Provider is an expressway and you need lanes to access the data.

    Dedicated local access
With SingNet ADSL, each customer has their own
exclusive lane to send and receive data. This means that no matter the number of people accessing the information highway, the speed will remain the same because you have your own lane. Cable access, on the other hand, does not offer dedicated lanes for customers. Rather they share the same expressway when accessing the Internet.
