Pop-up Spam

What is pop-up spam?

Pop-up spam appears as a message from the Messenger Service and is similar to the one below :

These messages are not sent by SingNet nor are the senders authorized by SingNet to send such messages to our subscribers. Do also note that the service is not a part of Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger. We have provided instructions on disabling the Messenger Service further down this page.

Should I visit the URLs advertised to unsubscribe?

No. There is no method to unsubscribe from these services as the spammers are targeting IP addresses. Visiting the URLs may cause spyware, viruses or Trojans to be downloaded into your computer or you may be asked to make 'donations' to the company for them to help you as in the message above.

In the example above, the message was sent from a computer system named GLENDA to a user who's IP has been deleted for privacy reasons. The message offers the user instructions on disabling the Messenger Service. However, upon visiting the webpage, you will be asked for a 'donation' after you've gone through Step 1 of the instructions. This is absolutely unnecessary as other websites provide such instructions and/or software for free.
