kid.gif (1850 bytes) As you may not know, the Internet is unchartered territory. You may encounter some pretty nasty effects. Below are a few suggestions to keep yourself and your children safe.

1. Email is not always private.
Whilst most email is only read by the sender and reader, there have been some rare cases where others have had access to people's email. To avoid such cases, KNOW WHO YOU ARE SENDING TO. Do not inadvertently forward email to people that you don't know. Always check that you have typed in the email address properly.

2. Protect your password.
Never in any circumstances tell your password to anyone. This is to protect yourself from unlawful use of your Internet account. Once you tell your password to another person, you have lost control of your account. Change it frequently and never use a guessable password such as your name, your date of birth etc. Use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. Don't give them a chance.

3. Many Web sites can gather information about you.
Some web sites can gather information about you through 'cookies'. This information could be things like where you are in the world, which ISP you are using etc. The current web browsers allow you to control whether you want 'cookies' or not.
It' s up to you to decide.

4. Know who you're dealing with.
If you decide to buy over the Internet, be wary of who the company is. It is best to deal with established and reputable companies. Do not part with your credit card details if you are not sure.

These are the basics to having a fun and educational time on the Internet.
