Microsoft Windows 98/98SE - Install and Configure Network Components
Important Note :
Before you proceed with the setup, please ensure that you have the original version of Windows 98 installation CD-ROM with you.
Installing Network Components
- Go to your Windows taskbar and click on Start > Settings > Control Panel
- The Control Panel window opens. Double click on the Network icon
- The Network Properties window opens. Click on the Add... button
- Highlight the Adapter item and click on the Add button
- The Select Network Adapters window opens with a listing of Manufacturers on the left and Network Adapters on the right.
- From the Manufacturers list, click on Microsoft after which, select Dial-Up Adapter in the Network Adapters list.
- Click on the OK button to continue
- You will be brought back to the Network Properties window, however, the window will have an additonal item - Dial Up Adapter. This is the item that you have just added.
- You need to add another item. Click on the Add... button
- Highlight the Protocol item and click on the Add button
- The Select Network Protocol window opens with a listing of Manufacturers on the left and Network Protocols on the right.
- From the Manufacturers list, click on Microsoft after which, select TCP/IP in the Network Protocols list.
- Click on the OK button to continue
- You will be brought back to the Network Properties window, however, the window will have an addiditonal item - TCP/IP. This is the item that you have just added.
You have successfully installed the Network Components for Windows 98.
Please continue with the Configuration part as indicated below...
Configuring Network Components
- Highlight the Dial-Up Adapter item and click on the Properties button
- The Dial-Up Adapter Properties window opens. Click on the Bindings tab
- Ensure that the TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter item is ticked
- Click on OK button to continue
- You will be brought back to the Network Properties window.
- Highlight the TCP/IP item and click on the Properties button
- The TCP/IP Properties window opens.
- Click on the IP Address tab and select Obtain an IP address automatically
- Click on the Gateway tab and leave all the entries as blank
- Click on the DNS Configuration tab and select Disable DNS
- Click on the OK button to continue.
- You will be brought back to the Network Properties window.
- Click on the OK button to update the changes made. Windows 98 may prompt you to insert your Win98 CD-ROM. Please follow the instructions given on the screen to complete the configuration.
- Most probably, Windows 98 will prompt you to restart your system. Please do so, so that the new settings will be in effect when you use the PC.
